When I started the semester, I had an idea of what I thought technical writing was-large, wordy documents about things like engineering and science. But I quickly learned that technical writing is much more than just that. Technical writing seems to be more about writing clearly and concisely (no matter what the subject is) in such a way that your target audience will be able to understand your message. This actually leads me to the second biggest lesson of this semester. Prior to taking this class, I was always under the impression that it was the reader's job to understand the material. Every class that dealt with writing stressed the importance of writing clearly, but it was always implied that the ultimate responsibility lied with the readers. But now, I see that writers are just as responsible for how their writing is understood as readers are for understanding the material.
This class really opened my eyes to a lot of different aspects of technical writing. I never would have thought that by the end of the semester I would have created a website and created videos. I will definitely take some of the skills I learned in this class and use them in future courses and in my career.
